Lubrizol: Growing Chinese Domestic TGDI Market Requires Innovation on Lubricant Solutions
CLEVELAND and SHANGHAI, September 22, 2017 - During the recently held 4th Turbocharged Gasoline Direct Injection (TGDI) Technology Forum, The Lubrizol Corporation, a leading global manufacturer of lubricant additives, provided its insights into the new challenges faced by lubricant manufacturers due to the increasing prevalence of TGDI technology. The corportation's expert also shared how Lubrizol had met these challenges head-on by providing proven oil solutions that had undergone extensive local tests.
As the Chinese government seeks to promote fuel economy in order to reduce CO2 emissions, automobiles with TGDI engines are gradually becoming the norm. It is forecasted that by 2020, the sales volume of automobiles in China will exceed 24 million, 54% of which will be equipped with a TGDI engine as a result of increasingly stringent emission standards and fuel economy legislation.
Although TGDI technology can significantly improve vehicle efficiency, it also poses many new challenges for oil marketers. OEMs have realized that current lubricant products are no longer suitable for TGDI engines, and that can lead to a number of destructive issues, including low speed pre-ignition (LSPI) and chain wear. The China VI emission standard, which will go into full effect in 2020, has also stimulated the application of after-treatment technologies such as gasoline particulate filters (GPF), and therefore the compatibility with these new devices should be addressed as well when developing oil solutions.
Furthermore, Lubrizol's experts pointed out that to ensure the durability of engines, lubricant solutions must look beyond upgraded vehicle equipment and technology and fully consider the complicated field conditions in China. During an earlier 2017 China Lubricant Technology Forum held in Kunming, Lubrizol shared information on its new additive technology that delivers necessary protection to TGDI engines while maintaining its superior performance on fuel economy and durability. These high-performing formulations have been proven to be effective through numerous local field tests.
Recognizing that TGDI technology is the future, Lubrizol is working closely with OEMs to find the best new oil solutions and has committed significant R&D and testing resources to the effort. Its newly unveiled Lubrizol® PV1119 is the first commercially available additive that meets GF-5 standards for fuel economy and durability as well as preventing LSPI and chain wear.
Being the industry leader in testing capabilities, Lubrizol has also verified the performance of the new additive solution via a full array of local tests, including lab bench tests, engine tests and field tests, all of which demonstrated that it can positively contribute to maximizing TGDI engine life.
